Hours after a sniper attack on a truck carrying U.N. inspectors, John Kerry said that there is “undeniable” evidence that the government of President Assad had used nerve gas against its population last week in a city near Damascus.

Kerry called the chemical weapons attack a “moral obscenity’ and that the world must respond to the use of weapons that have long been outlawed by international agreement.

Experts wonder whether or not Kerry’s most powerful statement yet was meant to make a case for a military action in Syria.

Although there was no direct reference to military action, Kerry did imply that the United States is ready to embark on such an action for the first time in a more than 2-year-old war.

Senior U.S. officials as well as world leaders, including UK, France and Germany, are discussing an “appropriate response.” Russia has maintained its opposition to military action.
