Syrian activists have accused President Bashar Assad of launching a gas attack that reportedly killed hundreds on Wednesday. If confirmed, the attack would be the worst reported chemical arms use in the Syrian war.

The White House has said that it had no independent verification about the use of chemical weapons in Syria but would consult with other U.N. Security Council members about the reports.

The attack reportedly took place in the Ghouta region, east of Damascus, and most of the casualties are said to be women and children. The Syrian government has denied that it has used chemical weapons.

In June, the U.S. government said it had conclusive evidence that Assad’s forces used chemical weapons against opposition forces, prompting a decision to arm rebel groups, although this has not happened yet.
