A terrorism threat has closed U.S. embassies and consulates throughout the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia on Sunday of this weekend. More than 20 diplomatic missions will be closed including missions in Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.

The U.S. Department of State stated, “Current information suggests that al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August.”  The State Department released further statements that the attacks are emanating from the Arabian Peninsula and  “may involve public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure.”

Yesterday, at the State Department Daily Briefing, Department Spokeswoman Marie Harf said, “The Department of State has instructed certain U.S. embassies and consulates to remain closed or to suspend operations on Sunday.”

Although most Americans may think Sunday seems like a usual day to close embassies, Sunday begins the workweek in most Muslims countries. According to the Department, diplomatic missions “that are normally be open on Sundays” will be shut down.

A senior State Department Official told CNN, that these threats were “more than the usual chatter.”
