The Yosemite Rim wildfire was only 23% contained as of Wednesday morning, and is still burning intensely despite the efforts of over 4,100 firefighters in the area.

The Yosemite Rim fire began burning 12 days ago, and has already burned its way into 187,466 acres of the Yosemite National Park.

“It’s burning its way into the record books,” said Daniel Berlant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Having destroyed 111 buildings, 31 of them homes, the Rim fire is the seventh largest blaze in California history, and is well on its way to becoming the sixth.

The fire has spread across 281 square miles, and is creating huge clouds of smokes billowing over the state of Nevada.

Firefighters worked through Tuesday night setting up containment perimeters with dangerous fire prevention tactics like backfiring, which involves burning vegetation inside a fire line to establish a containment line.

Residents in the area just south of CA 120 and Old Yosemite Road have been evacuated from the fire’s trajectory.
