A massive wildfire burning along the northwest edge of Yosemite National Park has scorched nearly 125,000 acres and has forced California Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency for the San Francisco area.

The Rim Fire started in the Stanislaus National Forest last week and is only five percent contained. It has spread nearly 200 square miles and has encroached into Yosemite National Park, although campgrounds and facilities in tourist haven Yosemite Valley is not threatened and remains open. Nine structures have been destroyed and 4,500 remain threatened.

The Rim Fire is also burning toward the Hetch Hetchy reservoir, where San Francisco gets 85 percent of its water.  The reservoir also generates power for San Francisco's municipal buildings, including San Francisco International Airport.  Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency because of the threat that those utilities might be cut off or that water supplies might be contaminated from falling ash.

An interactive map of the Rim Fire is available at LATimes.com.
