If you believe the argument that Hollywood will pursue a film out of anything with name brand recognition, you'd consider the following to be confirmation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Pictures is basing a movie off of Mattel's Hot Wheels franchise and two directors are in consideration for development.

Yes, those easily breakable toy cars from our childhood are coming to the big screen, though it seemed Hollywood was consistently shutting the possibility down for years. Columbia Pictures was the first to seize rights for a Hot Wheels film in 2003, followed by Warner Brothers in 2009. Both dropped interest gradually and the project was never able to come to life.

However, the search for a director is a new hope that Hot Wheels' development is revving back up for good. The two in competition for the director's chair are Simon Crane ("World War Z") and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo ("28 Weeks Later").

After deciding on a director, Legendary hopes to swing the production from Warner Brothers to Universal Pictures once the term deal expires. It also hopes to begin developing the film in early 2014.

Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, the film's script writers, describe the concept to be more "Mission: Impossible," as opposed to "Fast & Furious."

Do you think Hot Wheels could make for a hit franchise? Is it the next "Transformers"? (LOL, doubt it.) What could the plot be centered on? Let us know what you think!
