An explosion reported near a mosque in London is being treated as a suspected terrorist attack. No injuries were reported, but the area around the mosque was evacuated as a precaution. Residents reported a loud noise and found nails near the Kanz-ul-Iman Muslim Welfare Association Central Jamia Mosque. The explosion happened around 1 p.m. on Friday.
The incident occurred the same day as the funeral for solider Lee Rigby, who was attacked and killed in London by alleged Islamic extremists. Thousands of people including Prime Minister, David Cameron, gathered for Rugby’s military funeral. The incident that transpired on May 22, 2013 has triggered religious tensions throughout the country.
An increase in attacks against Muslim communities and their places of worship has been reported throughout the country. In June, a fire in a London community center was linked to anti-Muslim protesters. Additionally, last month an explosive device was found near in Walsall near a mosque.
According to the West Midlands Police, “An investigation is being led by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit and it is being treated as a terrorist incident. Some residents have reported finding debris in the area and finding nails. This is being investigated by forensic officers at the scene.''
Since Rigby’s killing, the English Defense League (EDL), a right wing group that opposes Islam, has staged protests all over the country. The EDL plans to hold a protest in Birmingham next week as they feel it is “describing the city as a hotbed of Islamic extremism.” On the EDL website the group has stated, “Muslims however, seek to impose their own set of laws and belief systems on the people of England, while showing contempt for British law and democracy. Our government does nothing, aside from funding their entire operation."
Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale will stand trial in November in November for the alleged killing of Lee Rigby.
