A Free Syrian Army senior commander, Kamal Hamami, has been shot and killed by jihadis linked to al-Qa'ida. The shooting brings forth the intensifying struggle within the rebel groups between moderates and Islamists.

The incident occurred as Syria’s opposition criticized the U.S. Congress for hindering the Obama administration’s efforts to increase support for the rebels fighting against President Assad’s government.

In the past, there have been reports of incidents between rebel groups and Islamic militants active in rebel-held areas, especially where the opposition has control of a large part of the territory. There have also been occasional clashes between Kurdish and Arab groups over control of territory.

The recent killing highlights the power struggle between the various groups of the Syrian Civil War. The Free Syrian Army (FSA), which regrouped in December under the Supreme Military Council, is led by General Salim Idriss who is seen as a secular-minded moderate. A number of FSA factions operate independently, at times fighting alongside more effective groups on the battlefield, including the al-Qa'ida-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra.
