Man of Steel, the latest film that's a part of the Superman franchise, grossed $196.7 million in box offices worldwide during its opening weekend. The film shattered the previous record for highest box office totals for a film's opening weekend in the month of June, which was held by Toy Story 3 and its $110.3 million debut in 2010.

The Warner Brothers film was directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan, both of whom had previously worked on superhero movies distributed by Warner Brothers.

British actor Henry Cavill stars as Superman, aka Clark Kent, while Lois Lane is played by Amy Adams. Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane also star in the film.

The Warner Brothers production beat out the debut of the apocalyptic comedy This Is The End, as This Is The End grossed $32.8 million during Father's Day weekend. Even though the film received mixed reviews from critics, it made $113.1 million in North America and $71.6 million in 24 overseas markets. Additionally, there were special Walmart screenings of the film on Thursday night which grossed the remaining $12 million.

The IMAX 3-D showings of Man of Steel also did very well, making $13.3 million during the opening weekend.
