The explosion which triggered a fire has left residents within the 2 mile radius of the plant inside with both doors and windows closed to avoid exposure to potentially toxic fumes.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal told reporters that 73 people had been taken to the local hospital. According to Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeffery Wiley the situation at the plant is stable.

Three people who were reportedly airlifted earlier are stated to be in critical condition from the blast.
