Two undercover Los Angeles Police Department detectives were shot from behind Tuesday morning.

Around 4:30 a.m., the detectives were in their car, approaching the gate of the Wilshire LAPD substation near San Vicente and Venice boulevards, CBS reported. A gunman opened fire, hitting one detective's hand and grazing the other's head. The detectives returned fire, but were uncertain whether they hit their attacker.

Both have been assisting in the search for their assailant, whom they described as a black male aged 30-35, wearing black clothes and a hat, according to SoCal News.
