On Friday, the Illinois House of Representatives voted 85-30 on a bill to allow the carrying of concealed guns in public. This move takes the state one step closer to joining all others in allowing some form of guns in public. Illinois is the only state in the country that does not allow most people to carry a concealed gun outside of the house.

As expected, the bill has been met with fierce opposition. The strongest opposition has come from many lawmakers representing Chicago, where, according to police, gun trafficking has led to a surge in violence as well as an increase in gang-related shootings and murders. The proposal also offsets President Obama’s administration’s efforts to establish more gun controls in the wake of numerous shootings in the country.

Democratic Governor Pat Quinn and the leader of the Illinois Senate, John Cullerton, vowed to fight the plan.
