Former Guatemalan Dictator Guilty Of Genocide

A three-judge panel found former Guatemalan dictator Efrain Rios Montt guilty of the genocide of more than 1,700 indigenous Ixil Mayans Friday, CNN reports.

According to CNN, the court reached a verdict just one day after the conclusion of the trial. Rios Montt, 86, was sentenced to 80 years in prison.

While in the past heads of state have been tried for genocide in international and foreign courts, Rios Montt's trial is the first of its kind to occur within the head of state's own judicial system.
