President Obama officially nominated Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx for Secretary of Transportation, a move observers had anticipated. If confirmed, Foxx will replace outgoing secretary Ray LaHood.

Foxx is expected to focus on improving the infrastructure of urban ground transportation, according to USA Today.

Foxx is the first African-American Cabinet nominee of Obama's second term. The initial Cabinet picks of the president's second term -- Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Treasury Secretay Jack Lew -- were all white men, which led to criticism of the lack of diversity in the selections.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is the only African-American to lead a Cabinet agency. Earlier this month, Foxx announced he wouldn't run for re-election in the Queen City.
