A terrifying scene unfurled at a Texas college campus on Tuesday morning as a male student stabbed 15 individuals before being apprehended. 12 victims were hopitalized including two who were were admitted to local hospitals in critical condition, but one has since been discharged and the other is in good condition, according to officials.
The stabbings occured at Lone Star College's Cy Fair campus, located just outside of Houston where the suspect was dragged to the ground by a fellow student after going on what was described as an attempted killing spree that was foiled in part when the suspect's knife blade broke, a source told the Houston Chronicle.
From the Houston Chronicle:
Capt. Robert Rasa of the Cy-Fair Volunter Fire Department said 12 people were rushed to area hospitals after the stabbings while three others were treated on the scene. He said many of the injuries were stab wounds to the face and neck area.
“Some of the details in the call slip did indicate that students or faculty were actively responding to work to subdue this individual,” said Adrian Garcia, the Harris County Sherrif, who added the suspect was about about 21 years old and enrolled at the college. “So we’re proud of those folks, but we’re glad no one else is injured any more severely than they are.”
One of those individuals was Ryan Ballard, a sophomore at Lone Star college, who along with another student helped pin the suspect down after hearing other students running away and screaming for help.
"It's still kind of shaky," Ballard told the Chronicle. "If we wouldn't have stopped him, who knows what he would have done?"
The campus went on immediate lockdown as news of the stabbings broke around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday morning, though the campus was soon declared safe and students and staff were allowed to leave to campus grounds.
The incident came nearly three months after a shooting occured at Lone Star College's North Harris campus where two people were injured.
