As America waits to find out how the $84 billion in sequester cuts will affect daily life many travelers were informed last week their sunny spring and summer plans could be affected.

Last week the secretary of homeland security Janet Napolitano warned the public about upcoming setbacks at the nations airports. Due to large cuts and hiring freezes for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Napolitano expects an estimated 150-200 percent in airport traffic.

However, the cuts may not be as detrimental as she has proclaimed. The USC Volunteer Center organizes "Alternative Spring Break" trips which include both domestic and international locations. This spring break students will find themselves in various locations including Guatemala, Thailand, Mexico, Death Valley, Baltimore and  Navajo Nation.

The trips, organized each year, are planned months in advance and as the center prepares to send students on these trips USC's Volunteer Center Director Judi Biggs heard about the cuts but isn't worried about USC's programs, she said Thursday,

" For our alternative break programs we traditionally arrive earlier than advised due to the size of our groups and we are not anticipating any delays."

One student Brittnie Marcell is excited but taking extra precaution for her trip to Guatemala, she said on Thursday,

"Yes I am very concerned about the line and waiting period to go through security upon my arrival to LAX."

When asked if she thought travelers should take precaution, she said, "Travelers should definitely take extra precautions. I was advised to take a lock with me for my luggage. I am a bit nervous about my personal belongings, and decided to leave my electronics at home"

Both student and program preparation may help with their traveling plans as students get ready to head to LAX this weekend. Albert Rodriguez, spokesperson for LAX, said Wednesday,

"So far at LAX it hasn't affected us." he said Wednesday, "It doesn't look like it will in terms of air traffic control."

As of this week it seems travelers are confident they won't be affected by the cuts or face Napolitano's estimated shift in travel time. As the traveling season heats up and so does the weather it will be interesting to see just how far the sequester cuts affect one of the nations biggest traveling seasons.
