Last Friday President Obama signed an order to begin $84 billion in sequester cuts to federal spending starting March 1st. The cuts are set to include defense and non-defense discretionary spending as well as other government funded programs including Medicare, education and multiple low-income programs.

According to the Huffington Post Obama said Friday,

“These cuts are not smart,” Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. “They will hurt our economy and cost us jobs. And Congress can turn them off at any time – as soon as both sides are willing to compromise.” However, since the days after the cuts multiple stories have been released on other programs affected by the cuts.

The Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, notified the public on Monday that passengers should plan to arrive at the airport early as U.S. spending cuts are already causing long lines at security checkpoints across the nation. Later on this week hiring freezes will begin for Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Customs and Border Protection. Some employees have already been notified but additional letters will be sent out over the coming week. Napolitano stated airports have seen 150 to 200 percent increases since the sequester and the numbers are only expected to grow.

Many politicians have come out and said Napolitano is only creating fear across the nation for an increase in delays that may not occur, however, Napolitano is confident that this upcoming travel season will accompany signficant shifts in airport accessibility. She told Rueters Monday

"Look, people, I don't mean to scare, I mean to inform. If you're traveling, get to the airport earlier than you otherwise would," she said. "And please don't yell at the Customs officers or the TSA officers - they are not responsible for the sequester."

As citizens across the control prepare plans for spring break and summer travel it will be beneficial to read TSA updates on the sequester and follow upcoming cuts to programs across the nation. Although multiple sights have provided a breakdown of sequester cuts only over the next few weeks and coming months will the impact be known.
