In his first Sunday Angelus, newly appointed Pope Francis delighted a crowd of over 300,000 people from his window overlooking St Peter’s Square.

The 76-year-old spontaneously abandoned his written speech, telling the crowd instead an anecdote about an Argentinean woman who made an impression on him with her wisdom.

The new pontiff displayed an unprecedented humorous side, not seen in previous Popes, as he joked about not doing PR for German cardinal Walter Kasper after mentioning his book during the sermon.

Pope Francis ended his sermon with the words “buon pranzo" indicating to the crowd to ‘have a good lunch.’

The massive crowd outside the Vatican cheered and laughed in response to Francis’ straightforward and down-to-earth style.

Francis also sent out his first tweet Sunday morning from the @Pontifex twitter account thanking his followers and asking them to continue to pray for him.

Prior to his Angelus sermon, Francis was reportedly seen from the side gate of the Vatican as he shook hands and chatted with people which caught many by surprise according to the Associated Press.

Francis, the first Latin American pope from Argentina, was elected March 13 and will live on the Vatican premises until his apartment in the palace is ready.
