The man suspected of shooting four people and injuring two more was shot and killed by police Thursday morning after an overnight standoff in Upstate New York.

New York State Trooper Jack Keller told NBC News that the suspect, identified as Kurt Myers, shot and killed a police dog that was sent into a room he had holed himself up in. The police returned fire killing the 64 year old suspect. "He was waiting for us. He kills the dog. They hear shots fired. Our teams returned fire and the suspect gets shot", said Keller.

Myers' death ended a 19-hour standoff with police.

Myers began his rampage at 9:30 am Wednesday, according to the Associated Press, when he started a fire inside his apartment in Mohawk, N.Y. He then drove to John's Barber Shop where witnesses say Myers calmly walked in and asked one of the men if he remembered cutting the suspect's hair. Myers is then said to have opened fire inside the shop. He killed two customers, wounded another, and wounded the shop's owner. The shooter then drove to Gaffey's Fast Lube in Herkimer, N.Y. where he allegedly used a shot gun to kill an employee and a customer. Myers then barricaded himself inside an abanded bar, where the standoff with police later took place.

Myers' neighbors described him a "quiet individual" and a "loner."

Although Myers was familiar with John's Barber Shop, the owner said he had not been in for years, and police are still searching for a motive behind the gunman's shooting spree.
