Police in a small upstate New York town say they are currently in a standoff with a local man who allegedly murdered four people at two separate locations earlier Wednesday.

According to NBC News, as of late Wednesday evening, law enforcement sources in Herkimer, N.Y. believe 64-year-old Kurt R. Myers remains holed up in an abandoned sports bar, although they have not been able to make contact with him.

Authorities believe Myers first set his home in the neighboring town of Mohawk on fire before driving to a barber shop around 9:30 am, where he is said to have killed two customers and shot two other men, including the shop’s owner. Myers is then alleged to have proceeded to a car wash, shooting two more men there.

The victims at the barber shop have been identified by State Police as Harry M. Montgomery and Michael G. Rancier, and those at the car wash as Thomas Stefka and Michael L. Renshaw.

As the New York Times reports, after a short manhunt, officers located Myers’ vehicle parked on Main Street in Herkimer at about 1 p.m., where he exchanged fire with police and retreated into the building where he is presumed to still be hiding out.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the shootings “truly an inexplicable situation” with “no apparent rational motive to the best of our knowledge.”

Myers had only one previous arrest for drunken driving in 1973. He was described by neighbors as a loner and “often acting strangely” when around town, according to the New York Times.

Police have evacuated the area around the bar and are prepared to dig in for the long haul, New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said at a Wednesday evening press conference.

Herkimer sits in the Mohawk Valley, roughly halfway between Syracuse and Albany.
