Former Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was granted bail and is now awaiting trial for the "premeditated murder" of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

After a four-day hearing in which the prosecution argued that Pistorius presented a flight risk, Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair found that "the accused has made a case to be granted bail," according to NBC News. Pointing out that Pistorius' unique double prostheses, which earned him the nickname "Blade Runner," made him too conspicuous to flee, Nair ordered the alleged killer to hand over his passport and firearms and set bail at a million rand (the equivalent of roughly $112,000).

This is the latest development in a case that has been plagued with difficulties since Steenkamp was shot to death on Valentine's Day. Evidence that the initial investigation was botched, revelations of former lead detective Hilton Botha's charges of attempted murder in a separate case, and the shock of South African champion Pistorius' fall from grace have made headlines around the world.

Pistorius' trial is set to begin June 4.
