A month after North Korea launched a test rocket to allegedly set an orbital satellite, the United Nations have unanimously agreed to condemn the country for its actions.

The U.N. Security Council will be imposing new sanctions on Pyongyang’s space agency to prevent a similar situation, under the belief that North Korea’s excuse was a cover-up.

From USA Today:

"The multi-stage rocket launch is considered part of a covert program to develop ballistic missiles that can carry nuclear warheads.

The council reiterated its previous demand that North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons program in a 'complete, verifiable and irreversible manner' and cease launches."

North Korea is persistent in reassuring the world that their three-stage rocket is designed with only peaceful intent, but the rest of the world is still taking action, with the support of China as well.

From The New York Times:

“The United States and China said they had worked closely on drafting the resolution, with Security Council diplomats saying they wanted to get it passed before South Korea takes over the monthly rotating presidency of the Security Council in February.”

On the other side, however, China has refused to accept the new sanctions placed by the Obama Administration.

The new measure adds on to the previous resolution, barring North Korea from undertaking nuclear or ballistic missile tests, as well as adding four organizations and six individuals to an existing blacklist.

While the measure itself may not have an effect immediately, it is significant in gaining a 15-0 vote approval. “This resolution demonstrates to North Korea that there are unanimous and significant consequences for its flagrant violation," said U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Susan Rice.
