Sources: Obama Selects John Kerry For Secretary Of State

President Barack Obama has decided to nominate Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry to be secretary of state, sources told ABC News.

For various reasons such as other pending Cabinet decisions and the nation in mourning after the school massacre in Connecticut, the White House will wait a few more days to make an official announcement.

The withdrawal of Susan Rice from consideration opened the door for Kerry, who has had a prominent role in Obama's political career. While running for president in 2004, the Massachusetts senator picked Obama, then an Illinois legislator, to give the keynote address at the Democratic Convention that propelled him to stardom.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is recovering from a concussion she suffered after fainting, is expected to retire in the next few weeks.
