Long Island Power Authority COO Michael Hervey resigned Tuesday, having come under scrutiny for his handling of Superstorm Sandy.

Newsday reported the resignation is effective at the end of this year.

Hervey said he'd been looking to leave LIPA since August, but severe criticism in the wake of Sandy's mass power outages must have come as a major blow. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order Tuesday, creating a commission to evaluate the response of utilities companies to address the needs of residents.

As Newsday reported, Hervey the response to the storm was "herculean." Explaining his decision to leave, he said, "I understand there's a lot of anger. At the end of the day I have to do what's right for me."
