The Shockey fire in eastern San Diego county has killed one man and is 55 percent contained after burning 2,851 acres, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The victim was an 82-year-old man with one leg in Tierra del Sol who refused the order to evacuate. Twenty homes, 15 out-buildings and 10 other structures were destroyed in the fire. Two dozen homes are still considered to be in danger. About 80 residents remain under evacuation orders.

Nearly 1,000 firefighters are battling the blaze, according to the Washington Post. The fire started Sunday east of the Campo Indian Reservation near the Mexican border. Authorities are investigating its cause.

While mild weawther helped contain the flames overnight, gusty winds started to pick up again Tuesday morning and may threaten to spread the fire. Crews fought against winds of up to 30 miles per hour to contain the fire over the weekend, CBS reported. Winds of up to 40 miles per hour are expected Tuesday.

“A single ember could start it off running again," San Miguel Fire District Battalion Chief Andy Menshek said.

Residents have been warned not to return to their smoldering neighborhoods. Even after the flames have been extinguished, hazards like downed power lines, debris and propane tanks still pose a threat to safety, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

Dry conditions sparked fires elsewhere in southern California. The Temprano fire in Riverside County has burned 150 acres and is 90 percent contained, according to KPCC.

Firefighters will spend Tuesday making neighborhoods safe for residents to return.

“It is one of our highest priorities,” Menshek said.
