With fall just getting underway, thoughts turn to warm coats, expertly wrapped scarves and the best winter boots to invest in. But in New York, spring has sprung: from revealing separates to bright colors and prints, here are the top trends from New York Fashion Week.

1. Mixed Bag
Not only are florals here to stay (check out the blossom explosion that was Thursday’s Brood presentation), but prints of any kind are also making their loud-mouthed resurgence. Whether in a bold matching leisure suit or mixed printed separates, this is the trend scoring major fashion points for spring. From Philosophy’s necktie collection to Monique Lhuillier’s showstopping digital prints, designers are loving the boldness of statement patterns. Even famously understated Elizabeth and James threw in some discreetly printed pajama-esque silk separates.
2. The Bold and the Beautiful
Edgy neon and soft pastels alike dominated the runways, leaving no palette untouched. Sea-inspired pastels – pale yellow and seafoam green – graced ethereal models at Charlotte Ronson. Christian Siriano’s “night at the ballet” runway show stayed true to its theme with baby pink and blue tones - a stark departure from the designer’s traditionally darker hues.
In contrast, fluorescent fuschia and all-over orange dominated Chado Ralph Rucci’s runway. Erin Fetherston gave ombre an update with white and bright orange, which will definitely be a color of the moment by the time spring rolls around.
3. Up and Away
Sorry wallflowers, it looks like barely-there separates are here to stay, with crop tops and bralettes gracing many a runway. Jason Wu embraced the trend with hot pants and black bras, while Marc by Marc Jacobs dressed his models in flirty geometric cropped tops. Derek Lam brought in heavily textured crocheted pieces for matching pencil skirts and midriff-skimming tank tops.
4. Earn Your Stripes
Oscar de la Renta’s showstopping black and white a-line gown (video below) was just one way in which stripes starred on the runways. Michael Kors’ his-and-hers striped sweaters were a more everyday take on the trend, while groovy hollographic stripes at Jonathan Saunders brought back the 80's.
5. Luxe Leather
It’s time to channel that inner bad-girl, but with a twist. Leather is back (though honestly, did it ever really leave?) and it’s not just limited to those basic browns and blacks. Derek Lam brought the leather look to spring with goldenrod and blue shades, while urban rock invaded Rebecca Taylor's otherwise demure collection of pastels in the form of a baby blue leather dress and moto jacket. Proenza Schouler’s green and red perforated leather was a sporty, unexpected take on the trend.
