Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi spoke out Wednesday of conflicts in the Middle East during his debut speech to the United Nations, calling the civil war in Syria a “tragedy of the age."

Morsi urged U.N. member nations to join to end the Bashar al-Assad regime which “kills its people night and day,” the Guardian said.

In addition, Morsi challenged the most debated topic in the Middle East, demanding UN membership for Palestine regardless of a peace agreement with Israel, reported the AP.

The first democratically elected Egyptian president also spoke out against the anti-Muslim film, “Innocence of Muslims,” stating that insults to the prophet Muhammad stem from an assault on Muslim religious and cultural values. His comments rejected President Obama’s case of free speech made Tuesday.
