Rep. Todd Akin announced he still plans to stay in the Missouri Senate race despite threats he and his family have received following his comments about "legitimate rape not causing pregnancy."

According to The L.A. Times:

Akin spokesman Steve Taylor said in a statement that the congressman “has received threats of rape of his official staff, family and the congressman himself along with suggestions that the individuals should die.”

Lt. Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Capitol Police, said Thursday that there was an “active, open investigation” into the threats.

The Missouri congressman has also continued raising money for his campaign, amounting to $125,000 on Thursday and $150,000 on Friday, according to his Facebook page.

The congressman came under fire last week for his controversial remarks, claiming that women have "biological defenses which prevent them from becoming pregnant in instances of 'legitimate rape.'" Many members of the Republican party, including Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, urged Akin to remove himself from the senate race.

The congressman instead issued an apology.
