Vera Wang’s Fall 2012 runway show featured a heavy emphasis on shades of nude and heavy outwear in luxe fabrics. Wang took a particular liking to the idea of layering, either above or under a sheer base. A color wheel of mostly camel and black was supercharged with bursts of fiery orange and burnt orange, shades that were often used as deliberate underpinnings for see-through dresses just sheer enough to allow a glimpse underneath.

A nude top layered beneath a turtleneck and shearling coat was modern and chic when paired with matching shorts, and the same camel tone was used for a cape. Wang took her love for layering to a newfound level, wrapping models in sheer fabric around the bodice and mixing her bright orange shade beneath the see-through lace. Form-fitting slacks won her points for wearability as one of the sole pieces a modern woman could incorporate from the runway into her daily wardrobe. In stark contrast, a black long-sleeved dress in a subtle geometric spider web print resembled something either Victoria Beckham or Cruella DeVille would wear atop knee high boots.

Practicality did not seem to concern Wang, who incorporated more creative geometric patterns into the show through pants and dresses. A memorable look was worn by model Joan Smalls, who owned the catwalk in black pants and a sheer top featuring a tightly wrapped bodice of dark gauze. Of course, it would not be a fall show without a slew of fur elements, either in heavy proportions as larger jackets or simply decorating the shoulders on a delicate top.

The models’ hair and makeup supported the seriousness andsophistication of each ensemble. Muted shades of brown and beige complimented the clothes, and faces were harsh and androgynous. Eyebrows were darkened and the hair was slicked back to give the girls a handsome, masculine look.

A sole ensemble in a softer teal shade was a welcoming reprieve from the harsh palette of colors, yet still played into the strength and austerity of the clothes with a heavily embellished top. The same shade was even more gorgeous on a floor-grazing gown of draped gauze, a look that easily topped off the show and left viewers with a breath of fresh air following the cold wind of dark colors and stern silhouettes.
