Google is going to be releasing an update to their software for Google TV, the search giant's TV platform, in the upcoming week or two depending on the hardware platform.

Adding a more intuitive user interface, Google TV adds Android app support and YouTube integration, allowing users to run their Android apps and watch YouTube videos on their TV. Furthermore, the home screen is now customizable and easier to organize. 

When released last year, Google TV was met with hope for "opening the living room," but ran into legal issues that resulted in a blockage of ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and Viacom shows from being viewed on Google TV's web browser. 

With this latest update, Google tries to remove their platform's moniker of a cable killer and represent a merge between TV and the Internet. Google Engineers Andres Ferrate and Ian Ni-Lewis discussed the company's goals with Google TV:

One of the things we could have done better was our messaging," conceded Ferrate toward the end of the presentation. It was a surprising admission, but a necessary one. Too many people in the content business see Google TV as a cable killer. But that's not how Google imagines it. We think that it's a new market that hasn't been open before," said Ni-Lewis. "We think this kind of device has a really interesting future.
