In choosing the most outstanding lead actor in a comedy series this year, one has to consider the fact that the nominees come from very different varieties of shows. Sure, they are all comedies, but the nerdy humor of The Big Bang Theory attracts a different kind of audience than the dry wit of the The Office. That being said, only three of these nominees were real contenders for this Emmy, and Steve Carell should have been the victor tonight.

Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon Cooper in CBS's The Big Bang Theory, won the Emmy for the Outstanding Lead Actor in A Comedy Series in 2010. His role as the anal retentive physicist is hilarious and unique, to say the least. Though both he and his costar Johnny Galecki (who plays Sheldon's roommate Leonard Hofstadter) were up for this award, Parsons is the fan favorite whose mercurial character won him his second straight Emmy. He was the easy pick to win, but Steve Carell definitely deserved to be recognized tonight for his great contributions to television comedy.

Steve Carell has been nominated for six straight years for this same Emmy, but has never won for his portrayal of Michael Scott in NBC's The Office. His hilarity and comfort with all things awkward has carried The Office in its peak, and made it one of the best comedies on television. The sadness of the show's followers as a result of decision to leave The Office is truly a testament to his wonderful job as Michael Scott for six years. His loss, yet again, is dissappointing, but one can only hope that Carell will still be celebrated in other ways in the future.

Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy in 30 Rock was undoubtedly a fierce competitor for this coveted Emmy, as his ease with comedy and notoriety have made him one of the most successful television stars of the moment. He and costar Tina Fey have delivered great comedy on 30 Rock since 2006, and both work well to keep it subtle and witty, as opposed to reverting to the slapstick, easy humor of the recent past.
