At least 18 people are dead after a car bomb exploded near United Nations offices in Nigeria Friday.  The blast rocked the compound in Abuja which houses 26 UN humanitarian and development agencies around 11 a.m.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the media at UN headquarters in New York, condemning the attack.

“This was an assault on those who devote their lives to helping others,” Ban said.

Witnesses told CNN they saw a vehicle speed through the compound’s gates shortly before hearing at least one explosion.

No one has claimed responsibility, however according to an MSNBC report, some officials believe a Nigerian based radical group named Boko Haram may be behind the attack.

"This is very likely the work of Boko Haram and, or, AQIM (al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb) and is a serious escalation in the security situation in Nigeria," the security source said. "This is the worst thing that could have happened."

Friday’s bomb is just one in a series of attack in the Nigeria capital over the last few weeks.
