If there is one thing Google does well it's finding ways to monetize collected information. To add to their hoard of wide-ranging data aggregation, the search giant purchased up-and-coming deal site The Dealmap, Monday.

The purchase comes eight months after Google's failed attempt to acquire discount site Groupon late 2010. Since then Google has introduced its own entry into the deal site arena with Google Offers, which currently provides deal aggregation services in select major cities.

The addition of The Dealmap means for Google the acquisition of the site's 2 million user base--both on desktop and mobile platforms--and, more importantly, Dealmap's DealExchange application programming interface (API).

From The New York Times

“We are impressed with what the Dealmap team has accomplished and excited to welcome them to Google,” Google said in an e-mailed statement to DealBook. “We’ve been thrilled with the early success of our commerce offerings, and we think they can help us build even better products and services for consumers and merchants.”

No details were released on how Google intends to use the new addition, but it's likely the company will use the newly acquired technologies to advance the Google Offers project. And, considering Google's move into the payment market with Google Wallet, the build up of Google Offers seems like a logical move forward for the search giant--look for deals on Google Offers and pay for deals with Google Wallet.

As for its partners and customers, The Dealmap says business will continue as usual, which is good news for Microsoft as they have been using Dealmap's API in Bing since March 2010.

From The Dealmap Blog

For the time being, we will continue to support The Dealmap's core products and partner services. People will still be able to access local and daily deals through The Dealmap website, mobile apps, and daily email, and we’ll continue supporting The Dealmap API and feeds for existing sourcing and distribution partners. As we’re ready to share more about integration and transition plans, we’ll update our partners and consumers on progress and any news.
