Use your mobile device to get exclusive footage from this year's Academy Awards.
Use your mobile device to get exclusive footage from this year's Academy Awards.

So you’re not famous and you don't know anyone famous. That’s okay. You can enjoy this year’s Academy Awards festivities at home. In fact, with advancements in technology, staying home hunkered down in front of your mobile device may offer the best footage of your favorite stars and starlets.

A quick search of the phrase, “the Oscars” on the apps store will bring back a list of several apps to choose from. Among those, here are a few that are catching some buzz.

The Oscars ® (for Apple devices)

First on the list is the “official” Oscars app from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It’s nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

Its list of features includes:

  • socializing capabilities by predicting the winners with others;
  • complete list of nominees and what the Academy is calling “valuable insider information” of the nominees; and
  • film trailers for the 10 nominated films.

One big downfall of this app is that it doesn’t provide any live coverage from the event. But, regardless of its meek features, this app is free to download so have at it.

Oscars Backstage Pass (for Apple devices)

Next on our list is an app from the host of the show, ABC.

As reviewed by the Bob Tedeschi of the New York Times, this app offers many comprehensive features including:

  • eight different live video feeds from the main event;
  • no commercial interruptions;
  • five different live video feeds from the Governor’s Ball after the awards; and
  • recaps and highlights from the events.

Disney/ABC Television Group Executive Vice President, Albert Cheng, however, does warn that the video quality may suffer if the cellular networks are overburdened. But, if that seems to be the case for you, connecting to your home Wi-Fi should help.

The backstage app is $0.99 but will be free to download post ceremony.

Live From the Red Carpet (for Apple and Android devices)

And finally this neat little app comes the E! Entertainment group and is both iOS and Android friendly. Some of its touted features include:

  • celebrity news and A-list fashion photos;
  • live video streams from the awards ceremony, including personal interviews;
  • E!’s GlamCam footage; and
  • hundreds of E! articles.

Two things set this app apart from other competitors; it offers exclusive shots from the GlamCam and, as previously mentioned, is available for the Android family.

There are several other Oscars’ apps out there so if none of these apps catches your fancy, do a quick search of your own and let us know which ones worked for you. Otherwise, sit, relax, choose an app, and enjoy the awards this year on your mobile device.
