Iran Talks Stall During Late Session
The planned two days of talks began in Istanbul between Iran and the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, the P5-plus-1 nations, hit rough ground when Iranian leaders said they wanted all economic sanctions to end upon consideration of proposals to limit their nuclear program.
The six nations, however, unanimously rejected the conditions, causing Iranian officials to shut down during the talks.
"The Iranians still will not admit that they have a problem with the world," one diplomat said. "Every idea we put forward, they find a reason not to take it up."
The official, speaking on rules of anonymity, said it seemed unclear whether or not talks would continue, but all parties agreed to continue talks Saturday morning.
These talks were part of a second meeting with Iranian officials in five weeks, but growing tensions have caused diplomats to question whether further discussion will be possible.
"We're not expecting any big breakthroughs," a state department official said.
