With the victory of Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin in West Virginia and the probable victory of Democratic Sen. Patty Murray in Washington, it may be nearly impossible for the Republicans to take control of the Senate.

Though the party has long been poised to sweep control of the House of Representatives, the Senate has been up in the air.

As of 8:52 p.m. EST, the New York Times’ Five Thirty Eight blog run by well-known statistician Nate Silver showed the Republicans with an 89 percent chance of taking the House and a slim 6 percent chance of taking control of the Senate.

Silver projects the Republicans will take 48 seats in the Senate compared to the Democrats' 52.

CNN said if Barbara Boxer wins the California Senate seat, the best case scenario would give Republicans 50 seats in the Senate.
