Staff Reporters

Part of an ongoing series where two staff reporters, who wish to remain anonymous for obvious reasons, navigate 10 days of purging toxins — and everything else — from their bodies.

Day 2, as predicted, was possibly even harder than Day 1. We spent all day seeing, smelling and reading about food.

We're closely monitoring our bodies for uh, toxin elimination. And if everything seems to be in the clear (pun intended), we're stopping the cleanse early. Why keep going, if everything's been flushed out?

The plan is to keep going until Wednesday night, then re-evaluate.

Today, I was an idiot. After downing the salt flush (which, to my dismay, tasted WAY better than yesterday and was drunk in only a few minutes), I decided that the way to increase my weight loss and help aid in my cleanse was to go swimming.

Note to self and to readers: when you have nothing solid in your stomach, do not attempt to exercise. The lemonade is not a friendly treat post-workout but is rather a constant reminder that I have nine more days of this retched lemonade concoction.

However, though I have been awake twice as long as yesterday, I also have not had a BM (bowel movement, get with the cleanse lingo) since the middle of the night — thank you laxatives. Does this mean that I am completely cleansed OR that my body has shut down and is no longer processing anything I put in it?

Either way, I do enjoy visiting the bathroom to go number one more than number two.

I cannot tell you the amount of times I considered quitting today. The hunger pains ebb and flow and get worse each time they appear.

It also doesn’t help when you have an unsupportive housemate who constantly eats in front of you, asks you if you want food, and give you advice as to how ineffective the cleanse is. Well pooh-pooh to you!

We WILL persevere and we WILL come out cleaner, healthier and lighter! Beauty is pain — to us!

I found myself at Subway at 9:30 p.m., watching my friend's foot-long "spicy Italian" sub coming together: avocados...olives...spinach...lots of pepperoni...and that warm, just-baked bread smell...asdf;lksdf.

Subway Hell. The hardest part of my day.

Weirdly, I didn't want chips or cookies. But my mouth watered when I looked at the fresh spinach — getting hungry just thinking about it!

The other challenging part of today was scheduling. I needed enough time in the morning to choke down the salt water, let it uh, move through my system, take a shower, finish my homework and make a fresh batch of lemonade before I had to be somewhere at 10...so I set my alarm for 7 a.m.

In reality, dragged myself out of bed at 8:15. Luckily, no uh, mishaps after I left home. Everything was less explosive and more in control today — probably because there's absolutely NOTHING left in my system.

I tried to go over to Kacie's in the morning to mix our lemonade, but she wasn't awake. All my lemonade ingredients are at her place, so I was running on water and one cup of mint tea until 2 p.m., when she brought a container of lemonade to me while I was at work (THANK YOU).

One good thing: The saltwater went down easier today. I think that's because I ground my own non-iodized sea salt (Costco, love you!) instead of using Morton's. It made a huge difference.  My roommate walked in on me hunched over my desk, drinking the water out of a Pyrex pitcher, which I tried to claim was "like a mug" because of the handle. The diet may not be lowering my BMI yet, but it's definitely lowering my standards....

By the end of the day, I had a pounding headache between my eyebrows and I couldn't even look at the lemonade. I'm now drinking it from a straw, which cuts down on the spiciness, but the cayenne pepper is just too much to handle. I'd much rather just fast and drink water, even though I need the calories from the syrup.

The longer the pepper sits in the lemonade, the spicier the entire drink becomes. So tomorrow, I'm going to try bringing the pepper with me in a little baggie and mix just before drinking.

One...day...at...a...time.
