8 Reasons Why Charlie Puth Should Be Your New Favorite Artist

The New Jersey native began promoting his musical talent on his Youtube channel, and was later signed by Ellen DeGeneres’ record label. In 2014, Puth decided to move to Los Angeles, and wrote his hit “Marvin Gaye” the first day he was there. Then, Puth shocked us all by writing “See You Again” for "Furious 7" in just a mere 10 minutes.
Now signed with Atlantic Records, Charlie Puth is stealing all of our hearts with his relatable songs and adorable charm. Puth performed his well-known hits as well as other songs from his EP “Some Type of Love” last night at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. His musical talent, beautiful vocals, and adorable quirkiness should make him your new favorite artist.
1. He Can Help You Deal With Any Heartbreak
We’ve all been through it, and so has Charlie. Heartbreak sucks. Before giving us a sneak peek from his upcoming album, Charlie told the audience about his experience with a broken heart. It led him to write the song “Up All Night” which he played for us and gave us all the feels. Seriously, listen to this on repeat and have Charlie Puth sing you out of your sorrows.
2. His Piano Skills Are Insane
Charlie studied jazz piano and later music production at the Berklee College of Music, which explains why he can expertly play anything from jazz to blues to pop styles on the piano. His songs included piano solo breaks, where he showed off his crazy talent. He was so comfortable playing, and you could definitely see his passion for his music.
3. He Made Up a Song at His Concert
Suddenly, Charlie began playing a little piano riff, added some words, and really confused the audience. As people began to wonder what he was playing, he stopped, laughed, and revealed that he really had no idea what he was doing. He was making it up right there. Then he joked about how wanted someone to make a remix of it. So much skill.
4. He’s Personable
Charlie made the audience feel like family. He joked around, encouraged audience participation, and laughed when he claimed he was “just making sure we were all cool.” Toward the end of his set he even spent a couple minutes to tell us all about his journey to Los Angeles and rise to fame. He humbly let us know how grateful he was by saying, “It’s pretty crazy because one year ago, I was literally doing none of this.” At one point he asked to have the lights turned on towards the audience so he could get a look at all of his fans and say hi. And of course, he asked to take a selfie with everyone, laughing about how he always wanted to do that. Can we please be your best friends, Charlie? I volunteer.

5. He covered “Can’t Feel My Face”
While Charlie’s songs are absolutely amazing, his covers are equally as fantastic. Charlie changed the sound settings on his piano and began to play some bluesy riffs, leaving the audience eager to hear what he was about to cover. The crowd went crazy when he sang the first line of The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.” I don’t think I’m the only one who would love to hear a collab with these two at some point in the future. Hint hint.
6. He Was Made For Music
Charlie Puth has perfect pitch. And no, I’m not just referring to his perfect voice while singing. This means that when he hears a sound, he can identify what note it is. That’s insanely cool. How many people can do that? It’s probably why his music has such depth and quality. He was literally born to make music.
7. He Wrote See You Again in Just 10 minutes
Before starting his last song, Charlie took a break to tell us about his inspiration for the hit “See You Again.” He came out to Los Angeles wanting to start songwriting and also to take a job offer from his friend. Once he got here, he was asked to write a song for the new "Furious 7" movie, which would be played during a compilation of clips honoring the late Paul Walker. Charlie, who had also lost a dear friend in a car accident, had plenty of inspiration to fuel into the meaningful words of “See You Again”. After just 10 minutes, he wrote the song that later would become Billboard’s number one for 12 consecutive weeks. If that isn’t musical genius right there, I don’t know what is.
8. You Can’t Choose a Favorite Song
I’m serious when I say I cannot choose a favorite song. When he first came out on stage and sang “I Won’t Tell a Soul”, I was convinced that was my favorite. Until he played “Some Type of Love.” Then “One Call Away.” Oh and then “Suffer.” Alright, you get it-- all of them were amazing. That’s when you know you’ve found your favorite artist.
Well there you have it. If you don’t know Charlie Puth yet, you will on January 29th when he releases his album “Nine Track Mind” which you can pre-order here.
