A trial between mobile giants Apple and Samsung commenced Tuesday following two years of development. Apple accuses the defendant of "infringing five Apple patents related to smartphone functions" and has demanded $2 billion in damages. In response, Samsung has counter-accused Apple of infringing two patents of their own.

Apple reports that consequences have been dire as a result of said infringement. "I hope you understand the reason the damages are high is because the scope of Samsung's infringement is massive," Apple lawyer Harold McElhinny said. "[Samsung] simply didn't have a product that could compete successfully against the iPhone."

This is not the first time the corporations have been pitted against one another in court. Earlier in the year, Samsung was court-ordered to fork over $929 million in damages to Apple.

Samsung attorney John Quinn's opening statement was direct: "Apple is a great company, but they don't own everything," he said. As for the $2 billion damages figure in particular, Quinn was skeptical - accusing Apple of exaggerating the circumstances. "[Apple has put] that number out there, in your heads so that it is the damages horizon you are thinking of," he said. "[The figure] is a gross, gross exaggeration and an insult to your intelligence."

The jury will deliberate after April 30, with court in session three days per week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
