Could this be the season to become a USC baseball fan?

After sweeping Northwestern, beating No. 3 Cal State Fullerton and sweeping North Dakota State consecutively, USC suffered their first loss against Long Beach State (2-1) in their first away game. With a 7-1 record however, USC Head Coach Dan Hubbs and outfielders Vahn Bozoian and Omar Cotto Lozada remain confident about their strong lineup and deep bullpen facing No. 13 Cal Poly.

After hitting two huge home runs against both Northwestern and then Cal State Fullerton, superstar sophomore outfielder Vahn Bozoian is optimistic about the rest of the season and, specifically taking on Cal Poly this weekend. Bozoian says maintaining this "high streak" will be a matter of "trusting what the coaches have to say and to be consistent with the routine everyday." In reference to USC's young baseball team, Bozoian explains, "last year was really tough. We had a lot to go through and we were really young, and we did have a lot of guys that played as freshmen. So having that extra year of experience and knowing we have something special, that we can do it and that we can stick to it no matter what the deficit, we know we can pull through." When facing Cal Poly, Bozoian asserts, "the game is as simple as you want to make it, and its baseball. Anyone can beat anyone, on any day. I think if we come out and play the game we are capable of playing, and stay within ourselves, I think we'll have a really great series."

Redshirt junior Omar Cotto Lozada made his childhood dreams of scoring a walk-off home run in Division I College Baseball last Sunday in the 12th inning against North Dakota State. Lozada says, "It was funny, before I went up to bat I was talking to coach and asking him 'hey do you want me to take the first pitch?' He told me 'if you see a fastball, put a good swing in, hit it up the middle and try to get the next guy up.' Luckily, first pitch-- fastball, I just tried to put a good swing in and it just went out. It felt like a dream, like a World Series experience, something you dream of when you're little, a walk-off home run." When talking about USC's attitude to "Fight On" through extra innings, Lozada claims, "it's all about staying focused, staying within ourselves and taking it pitch by pitch. It's something we've built all fall and now into spring." Thinking about the future against Cal Poly, Lozada remains steady, "like Coach Hubbs says, anyone could beat us and we could beat anyone. We just need to play our game, play small ball, play hard every time and execute pitches. If we do that, we will have a good opportunity to beat Cal Poly."

In reference to the pressure his team may be facing with Cal Poly coming up this weekend, Coach Hubbs stays cool, calm and collected. "The biggest thing for us right now is we just focus on the process of playing. I don't think it matters who we play, where we play or when we play them, I think it's about how we play the game. We've had some close games that I think we should have won more handly that we didn't. That came back to bite us a little bit when we played against Long Beach, but we've been finding a lot of ways to win and that's a knack that we didn't have last year."

Coach Hubbs explained the Trojans' game plan for taking on the Mustangs. "Wyatt Strahan will start again the first [game], Bobby Wheatley the second, Kyle Twomey the third. It'll either be Garrett Stubbs or Jeremy Martinez behind the plate, Kevin Swick will play third, Frankie Rios at short, Dante Flores at 2nd, Jake Hernandez at 1st, Vahn Bozoian in right, Timmy Robinson at center with Jeremy Martinez DH when he doesn't catch. Garrett Stubbs will play left when Jeremy catches and AJ will DH. Out of the bullpen, Kyle Davis will probably close but we also have James Guillen, Sean Adler, Nigel Nootbaar, Brent Wheatley and Jeff Paschke that have all been throwing well. We have a lot of options out of the pen and we're excited about that because we think we're going to need it."

And finally Coach Hubbs gives credit to "the kids who are pitching" for the dramatic improvement we've seen in USC's pitching staff, with last year's team ERA being 4.81 and this year's team ERA of 1.95. Coach Hubbs adds, "the experience that they got last year is the biggest contributor to how they started this year. The fact that we can rely on more arms to be consistent and the starters are going deeper into games which gives us more flexibility where we don't wear those guys out down the stretch so they'll be fresh longer."

And just for kicks and giggles, USC Baseball is taking advantage of their team chemistry and having as much fun as possible. Outfield rockstars, Vahn and Omar goofed off before practice to show us that the key to hitting home runs is "all in the hips."

Don't miss out this weekend. Rain or shine, we'll see you at Dedeaux as USC takes on No. 13 Cal Poly for a chance to prove themselves and potentially enter nationwide polls.
