China Declines U.S. Shipment Of Genetically Modified Corn

The shipment contained MIR162, which is an insect-resistant variety of corn seed. China has a list of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, that they approve to be allowed into the country and MIR162 is not on the list. The checklist is present because consumers in the country are skeptical in purchasing GMOs.
This year, China is expected to purchase 7 million tons of corn from the U.S., who is the world’s largest producer of corn. This is expected to be a minor hiccup and that the countries will continue to trade food together.
