'Modern Family' Recap: ClosetCon '13

Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) brings Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) out to Missouri to visit his family on the farm. While Cameron feels right at home, Mitchell feels out of place amongst the prairies and the tractors, and purposefully excludes himself from farm related activities.
However, when Mitchell realizes that he has offended Cameron's culture, he decides to saddle up, and prepare for work on the farm. Mitchell's change of heart coincides with a visit from Cameron's old-fashioned grandmother, Grams, who doesn't know that Cameron is gay.
While Cameron and Mitchell argue over whether or not to keep their relationship a secret, a tornado hits Missouri, forcing the whole family into the cellar. Once they are in the cellar, Cameron decides to tell Grams that he is in a relationship with Mitchell, and that they're engaged to be married. Grams responds by saying that she will attend the wedding…as long as she can be outside protesting the ceremony.
Meanwhile, Gloria (Sofia Vergara) protests when she is stuck spending time with bickering sisters Alex (Ariel Winters) and Haley (Sarah Hyland.) The sisters are arguing over who gets to date the attractive pizza delivery guy, when they get a model airplane stuck in both of their hair. The propellers catch a chunk of each girls' hair, forcing them to stay together.
After being together all day, the girls finally stop arguing for a moment and realize that Gloria had the ability to set them free the whole time. Gloria just wanted the two girls to get along so that she wouldn't have to hear them fighting.
In the other room, Phil (Ty Burrell) uses all of his knowledge to put a model rocket back together. The rocket is one of Jay's (Ed O'Neil) most prized and valuable possessions, so Phil enlists the help of Luke (Nolan Gould), Manny (Rico Rodriguez), and his father, in order to fix the broken rocket.
The whole family then watches in awe as Phil is surprisingly successful in his efforts to fix the mini Apollo 13.
Claire (Julie Bowen) is similarly in awe of the events at the Closet Convention. Claire attends the convention with Jay, but feels a little out of place when she realizes that Jay knows a lot of people. Jay and his old friend Rita decide to catch up and play a trick on Claire as part of her initiation into the event.
While Jay and Rita work on the prank, Claire eavesdrops on part of their plan and misunderstands what the pair is talking about. Claire begins to think that Jay has been having an ongoing affair with Rita, even when he was married to Claire and Mitchell's mother.
After Jay debunks the idea that he was unfaithful, the father/daughter duo have a heartwarming talk about relationships whether they be familial, friendly or romantic. Moments like these remind us why this "Modern Family" is so much like our own.
