Death Tolls From Obesity Higher Than Previously Believed

Around 18 percent of all deaths in the United States are due to obesity, a number almost four times higher than previously believed, according to a publication in the American Journal of Public Health. 

The research, conducted by a team of sociologists led by a Columbia University demographer, questions how serious the government is about the dangers of obesity. 

In 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention slashed its estimates of obesity-related deaths from 365,000 a year to 112,000 a year, amid a battle over how it made its calculations. 

With a third of Americans overweight and another 35 percent obese, there is momentum to reduce the average life expectancy of an entire population for many years to come.
