Staff Reporter

Every other week, Staff Reporter Jillian Morabito showcases some of the tunes you should be tuning in to. Here are her picks for your new Must Listen Playlist:

“Breezeblocks” by Alt-J

After releasing their debut album more than a year ago, the English indie band is finally starting to garner much deserved success. The beat of “Breezeblocks” is pounding and reminiscent of Jack White and The xx. Though his lover is “Morphine, Queen of my vaccine,” this track is certainly about a love gone wrong. The rockers are now being played on the radio instead of just being the background music to your shuffling through the Urban Outfitters sale rack.

“Better Days” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros know nothing less than how to cheer you up with one of their uplifting folk songs. The new single, “Better Days,” from their latest self-titled album does just this, and more. The song is a social commentary that lends hope for a future without discrimination, sickness, etc. Instead, everyone should just be dancing.

“Step” by Vampire Weekend

One of the standout tracks from their new album, Vampire Weekend’s “Step” is a song that has the ability to take you to memory’s past, or just the beach. How perfect are the lyrics, “Wisdom's a gift, but you'd trade it for youth” to describe the feelings of growing older. Vampire Weekend continues to excel in not only music, but also lines that will be used for an Instagram caption.

“L.A. Calling” by Crystal Fighters

Beginning kind of like a Vampire Weekend song, “L.A. Calling” is yet another song about finding love in the City of Angels. Interesting fact, the band is actually from Spain, and also has members hailing from Britain. Regardless, this band has alternative dance tracks that are flawless, and “L.A. Calling” is certainly a stand-out track. Crystal Fighters leave you knowing London isn’t the only city that can be called upon.

“Night Moves” by Bob Seger

If summer nights had an anthem, it should be “Night Moves.” The song about being young and keeping that “sweet summertime” fling alive was written by the legendary Bob Seger over thirty years ago. To this day, the song is still referred to as one of the songs that have influenced rock. Also, be sure to note the Matt LeBlanc cameo in the music video.
