For the second consecutive offseason, Tim Tebow has made headlines by joining a new team. The former Hesiman winner signed a two-year contract with the New England Patriots last Tuesday, and will report to training camp as New England’s third-string quarterback behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett.

Unlike last season with the New York Jets, this one should not end in complete chaos.

Tebow’s signing not only ends the speculation of whether or not he will continue his career in the NFL, but it also raises the question of how Patriots coach Bill Belichick plans to implement him in their offensive scheme. It’s also a signing that, although questioned in the community, benefits both Tebow and the Patriots. The Patriots get a team player that can add more variety to the offense, while Tebow gets a chance to lose some hype and boost his NFL potential.

How Patriots Benefit

Belichick, one of the best coaches in the NFL, spoke highly of Tebow just days before his signing. The NFL's coaching sage convinced himself and the Patriots organization that Tebow was worth taking a gamble on, even though the putrid Jacksonville Jaguars, the favorites for Tebow entering the offseason, quickly declined any attempts to pursue the quarterback. With the way the deal is set up, however, it’s a win-win for the Patriots.

According to USA Today, Tebow’s two-year contract includes a minimum base salary and no guaranteed money, as well as up to $1.5 million in playing incentives for 2014. This provides an extremely team-friendly contract for Tebow, as it allows the Patriots to see what Tebow can bring to and learn from the team without suffering too much of a financial burden. If they don’t like what he brings and can’t find a way to utilize his services, they can cut him free of charge.

The Patriots also are much better suited to handle “Tebowmania” than the Jets were. When the Jets traded for Tebow, there was speculation about Tebow being a replacement for quarterback Mark Sanchez after the former USC quarterback committed 26 turnovers and failed to make the playoffs. The chaos from the controversy led to a divide within the organization, which was unable to use Tebow effectively and made him more of a sideshow than a part of the offense.

The Patriots’ organization has already proven that they are capable of handling the circus, giving Tebow limited contact with the media. They are much better suited to handle the circus that Tebow brings, with no thought of quarterback controversy and an era of success other NFL teams would be thrilled to emulate.

New England can take their time to see where Tebow is best suited in their offense, making sure to utilize his skill set if it fits within the system. He can be used as a goal-line quarterback (his intended role with the Jets), run the wildcat or read-option package, or even switch to playing tight end or running back, where he could revive his career, especially with the issues surrounding tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Regardless, Belichick will be sure to do what the Jets couldn’t, and take advantage of his skill set to make the Patriots’ offense even more potent than it already is.

How Tebow Benefits

What Tebow ends up getting out of this will benefit him more in the long-term than over the short-term, and it could serve as a revival for a player whose NFL career was seen to have passed.

Tebow will spend the next two seasons working under Tom Brady, a quarterback with 44,806 career passing yards, 334 career touchdowns, and three Super Bowl rings. There will be no controversy as to who will start for the Patriots, and Brady can act as a mentor for Tebow over the next two years, improving his passing abilities and quarterback instincts to improve his chances of being a successful NFL quarterback.

Tebow will also be able to escape the media circus he has become. Once a college superstar, the former Broncos starting quarterback has been known more for his name and who he is rather than what he has (or hasn't, as some would argue) done in the NFL. Going to the Patriots allows him to avoid the media as much as possible, allowing him to focus more on his on-the-field performance rather than the chaos he causes off it. The Patriots are arguably the best team to handle the media, allowing them to focus on the upcoming season while simultaneously helping Tebow focus on the remainder of his NFL career.
