Pope Meets With Head Of Anglican Church
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, visited with Pope Francis in Rome for the first time on Friday. Although the churches have historically been at odds with one and other, today’s talks focused on the unity.
Discussing the issues of modern society, Pope Francis and Justin Welby agree on gay marriage and financial reforms in the church. Welby commented we are "absolutely at one on the issues."
Specifically, Welby stated that he and Pope Francis were "equally at one on our condemnation of homophobic behavior." The Pope stressed co-operation between the Anglican Church on the issue of gay marriage by emphasizing the "importance of the institution of the family built on marriage"
Additionally, the two discussed the ethical and financial reforms. Pope Francis stressed the catholic social teachings of social justice. He stated the need "to build an economic system that is at the service of man and promotes the common good." The two have found a common ground on both of these issues.
Although the divide among the Catholic and Anglican Churches has been apparent, Welby stated that, "In terms of values and principles, there was a really strong commitment to working together … and recognizing that there are major issues around that but recognizing that this is an absolute necessity."
