Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Bring The Laughs To The Golden Globes

The hosts opened the show with a hilarious set, complete with witty banter, some digs at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and quite a few one-liners. As wonderful and experienced as Tina Fey is, the better of the two tonight had to be Amy Poehler, who seemed to help pick up the pace of the opening monologue rather quickly. While Fey’s jokes received chuckles, Poehler threw in snide remarks and was showered in laughter.
A particularly noteworthy moment was when Poehler claimed she had not been following the controversy surrounding “Zero Dark Thirty,” but that when it comes to torture, she would trust director Kathryn Bigelow, “the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.” Perhaps the most memorable gag of the night, Poehler brought laughs from around the crowded room at Bigelow and Cameron’s expenses.
Nevertheless, it was both Fey and Poehler who, together, made the sophisticated awards show a hilarious night. The hosts remained naturally in the background during the duration of the night, as celebrity announcers were tasked with handing out awards to nominees, but the cohosts made sure they were still relevant.
Did you catch their random little shenanigans in between award announcements? If not, Poehler posed as ‘Darcy St. Fudge’ from “Dog President” for Best Actress in a Miniseries, complete with a set of fake teeth. Not to be outdone, Fey later posed as ‘Damien Francisco,’ also from “Dog President,” in a beard and mustache. The hilarious couple’s antics provided some unexpected comedic relief.
Interestingly enough, their material was relatively mild in comparison to, say, Sasha Baron Cohen’s lewd remarks towards Anne Hathaway and stab at Daniel Day-Lewis. Besides the bite towards director Bigelow and a warning to Taylor Swift to “stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son,” Fey and Poehler refrained from truly offending anyone (perhaps for the best, actually…)
Overall, both Fey and Poehler were wonderful cohosts for the Golden Globes. They provided many giggles throughout the evening and should be considered for hosts again in the future. And, though neither one took home the win for Best Actress in a TV Comedy, it is clear the experience of hosting was more significant than the competition between the two.
