Kreayshawn Twerks It At Avalon
On the eve of holiday break, I had the opportunity to attend Kreayshawn's concert at Avalon in Hollywood.

I volunteered to cover her concert as soon as the pitch circulated in September. I'd been familiar with her music for the past few years and was eager to hear her firsthand.
She is known as something of a legend for defying female music stereotypes, and at least alluding to if not outright acknowledging the fact that she is gay. For all these reasons and more, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to interview her and prepared extensively- though it was an occasion she sadly bailed on.
What happened, Kreayshawn?!
Despite that disappointing setback, I attended her concert and entered the unknown. The following is what I found…

The space smelled like weed- that was not so much of a surprise...
Kreayshawn certainly had some super-fans in attendance. They threw glowsticks, knew all the words to her songs, and shouted "Marry me Kreayshawn!!!" whenever possible. At one point Kreayshawn asked the audience who was there with their best friend and a TON of hands went up, which was cool to see. Two of those hands belonged to a middle-aged woman in a floor-length pink eyelet dress who danced energetically the whole concert in sunglasses. Her BFF appeared to be the middle-aged husband standing in the corner with a scarf around his head. Again, kind of a mixed bag in the crowd department. Oh, and there were at least three fans there on crutches, which was impressive. Dedication!
One of the things Kreayshawn has branded herself on is being a rebel with her fashion and style. Her website even has a page where you can play in "Kreayshawn's Closet", a virtual paper doll with cute outfit options, Minnie Mouse ears and changeable backgrounds. Of course I played around with the virtual Kreayshawn doll and was so impressed by the concept. Because of this, I was seriously disappointed by her costume choice for the show. Kreayshawn was dressed in jean shorts and a cropped red, yellow and green striped tee with her hair in pigtails. That's it. There was nothing special about it and it did nothing for her. Los Angeles is the second largest city in the US, give us some glam!
Kreayshawn admitted on stage that she's been messing up on stage a lot. She was sick earlier in her tour, even having to cancel a show in Detroit, so maybe that accounts for the weaker performance. Her apology was less than heartfelt though. It actually wasn't an apology, it was more of a snarky statement of fact.
The best part of the show was her performance of "Gucci Gucci," which was to be expected. The other best part was when she invited her fans onstage to dance and twerk with her. You can check out pictures in the slideshow below.
All in all, the show was not a complete bust, but left much to be desired. Kreayshawn's excessive showing of 'tude was annoying, particularly in the face of so many young female fans. There was no "I love you, LA!!!" or praise for her fans' dedication. It didn't appear that she even cared to dress up. Those points I found disappointing. If you're going to be a performer, love your fans no matter how crappy you're feeling or undersold the venue. You've got a show to put on.
Oh, and follow through with your interviews. I had some damn good questions to ask! Oh well, maybe next time.
