Sen. Dianne Feinstein pledged Sunday to introduce new gun-control legislation at the beginning of next year's congressional session, just two days after a shooting in Newtown, Conn. left 26 people plus the gunman dead, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Connecticut officials said those killed in Friday's massacre were shot with a semiautomatic assault-style rifle. Feinstein said the goal of her proposal is to get "weapons of war off the streets of our cities."

“I’m going to introduce in the Senate and the same bill will be introduced in the House, a bill to ban assault weapons," Feinstein said on NBC's "Meet The Press." "It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession. Not retroactively but prospectively. And it will ban the same for big clips, drums or strips of more than 10 bullets. So there will be a bill."

She refused to comment when asked whether President Barack Obama has failed to lead on gun control, but stated that her bill would pave the way for him to oppose assault weapons.

A federal ban on assault weapons, first passed in 1994 and signed by President Bill Clinton, expired in 2004. Obama said he favored reinstating the ban, but was not active in pursuing it during his first term.
