The Mayans predicted that Dec. 21, 2012, is the end of the world and despite NASA and other scientists repeatedly denying that tomorrow is doomsday, people are still spending a lot of money on supplies.

In preparation for doomsday people are buying in bulk survival gear and in some cases even stocking up on luxury items to create a comfortable bunker.

Ron Hubbard, owner of Atlas Survival Shelters say he sells underground bunkers that are “larger than a New York City apartment” made out of corrugated pipe and are able to withstand a nuclear bomb. Each bunker costs between $50,000 to $100,000—and people are buying.

Hubbard told The Wall Street Journal that in the last three months his company sold 50 bunkers. Last year he sold just 25.

Atlas Survival Shelters isn’t the only one feeling the big business boom. Massive stores like Costco Wholesale and Walmart saw an increase in business. For Costco sales just on shelf-stable food has tripled since last year.

Others like Tony Brown, a private investigator in Southern California spent almost 60,000 dollars on supplies including an ultralight plane. Brown also filled his home with nearly three tons of food.
